One of the most important icons of Saints preserved at the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos is the one of Saint Demetrius. The Saint is depicted in bust and frontally at the type of the military saint. Advanced students who are already familiar with the art of hagiography will have the chance to further evolve by indulging into the warm colors and the serene and slightly melancholic gaze of the Saint and create an exact replica of the young warrior and martyr of the church. Students will follow the Paleologan style and study the work of Manuel Panselinos who is considered one of the greatest artists of all times. The artwork which they will be asked to reproduce was created around 1.300 AD.
Similarly beginners of the seminar will have the unique opportunity to create their own artwork depicting the form of Saint Demetrius according to the Athonite technique of hagiography. The deep spirituality of the military Saint and his excellent ethos classify the icons into the ones that can convey the experiences of the artist.
The Archon hagiographer of the Patriarchate of Alexandria Mr. Constantine Xenopoulos, student and professor of the Athonite Ecclesiastical Academy of Mount Athos, transmits with simplicity and naturalness his knowledge to those who want to indulge into Byzantine art. Furthermore he significantly helps those who want to work professionally on hagiography.
Upon completion of the five cycles of seminars, students will have the opportunity to take exams by creating a copy of a Byzantine art project, according to the techniques that they have been taught. The Selection Board will consist of professors of the Theological School, the School of Fine Arts and the Archon hagiographer of the Patriarchate of Alexandria Mr. Constantine Xenopoulos. Further information will be announced soon.
The participation fee is set at 200€ per person for the 20 teaching hours.
